The castle changed hands many times, it was occupied by James IV from 1493-1495 during his campaign against the MacDonalds. The MacLeans tried unsuccessfully to take the castle in the 1550's, but the Campbells did take Mingary from the MacIans. Then in 1644 the MacDonalds took the castle with the Campbells recapturing it back in 1651.
