Downdaniel
Castle
Downdaniel was built
in 1476 on the site of a Danish
fortress called
Dundanier, on the north bank of the river
Bandon.
Downdaniel fell to English forces
shortly after the
1641 rising. Cromwell then gave
the lands to the
Earl of Cork, but after this time, the
castle fell into
disrepair and was abandoned.

Mallow Castle
Mallow Castle is
an entertaining ruin built in the very
late 1500s. Mallow
is thought to have been built by
Sir Thomas Norreys,
and it successfully held out
against a siege
in 1642. But it fell to an attack
by Lord Castlehaven
3 years later.
