 Dunluce Castle
Dunluce Castle
Little is known of the castles history before the 16th
century, when it was in the hands of the MacQuillan.
Dunluce had no shortage of dramatic episodes over
the centuries. Sorley Boy MacDonnell, twice lost
the castle, once to Shane O'Neill and in 1584 to
Sir John Perrott.   Sorley boy regained the castle
and repairs were underway when he died  in 1589.

Dunluce was a place of grandeur in the 1600's when Randal
MacDonnell (the 2nd Earl of Antrim) and his wife, Lady
Catherine were in charge. The castle carried all the trappings
of a rich and powerful family.  Then in 1639, part of the
lower yard fell into the ocean, taking several of the household
staff with it.

A rarely seen side of Dunluce, this photograph was
taken from the "other side" of  Dunluce Castle.
