The pathway up to Bodiam is deceiving. For once you clear the small hill, you will find the castle completely surrounded by a moat, Bodiam was one of the last moated castles to be built in the late 14th Century,

The original bridge to Bodiam actually came in from the side. So that the enemy had to walk directly past the front of the castle to approach. This bridge was added later.
